Thank you
Thank you for taking a moment to look a little deeper.
Every photograph on display has its own story. Some were years in the making, others lasted only a fraction of a second. Together they represent moments that caught my eye, places that moved me, and pieces of Melbourne and beyond that I felt were worth preserving.
Rather than simply displaying the finished image, I wanted to share the story behind it. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Melbourne in Silence
Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne
The Story
When Melbourne entered its first COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, I realised we were living through a moment that would become part of our city's history.
Almost immediately I began visualising a series of photographs that would document Melbourne in a way that had never been seen before—and hopefully would never be seen again. This image of Bourke Street Mall was one of the photographs I had in mind from the very beginning.
From the first days of lockdown, I found myself constantly watching the weather forecasts. I wasn't simply looking for an empty street; I was waiting for the right combination of conditions. Rain to leave reflections across the tram tracks, soft early morning light, and a city brought to a standstill by lockdown. I knew that if everything came together, there was an opportunity to create something truly special.
When the forecast finally looked right, I planned my trip into the city. For weeks I'd been imagining this photograph. That morning was my chance to see whether the image in my mind could become reality. Leaving home in the early hours of the morning, I knew this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I couldn't be certain the conditions would be exactly as I'd imagined, but I also knew that if I didn't go, the photograph I had envisioned might never exist.
As I walked into Bourke Street Mall, everything came together. The streets glistened from the overnight rain, the first light of morning reflected from the wet pavement, and where thousands of people would normally pass every hour, there was only silence.
Standing in the middle of Bourke Street Mall without another person in sight was surreal. The city hadn't disappeared—it had simply paused. In that moment I realised I wasn't just creating a photograph; I was preserving a chapter of Melbourne's history.
Looking back now, this image means far more to me than an empty street. It is part of a collection created to remember an extraordinary time in our lives—a reminder of a moment that I hope future generations will only ever experience through photographs.
Thank you for taking the time to read the story behind this photograph.
